Nowata Sweeps Kansas

For the first time ever, Nowata played Kansas, Oklahoma on Friday, February 12. The girls played first and trailed Kansas by eighteen points during the first half of the game. At the end of the fourth quarter, the Lady Ironmen were only three points down. It looked like Kansas was going to win the game, but Nowata had something else in mind.With only two seconds remaining in the game, senior Reva Smith shot and sunk the ball right at the three point line at the end of regulation time to send the game into overtime with a tie of 61 a piece. The crowd jumped up, shouting with excitement!

Four minutes of overtime began, sophomore Kennedy Downing was fouled, putting her at the free throw line. After making both of her free throws, put Nowata ahead and lead them to win by two points. The final score was 63-61.

In the boys game, it was a team effort for the Ironmen. Kansas led for most of the first half as they took a 34-26 lead by the end of the first half.  Nowata outscored the Comets 50-46 in the second half to pickup their tenth victory of the season. Junior, Cody Smith and sophomore, Zen Callahan led Nowata with 20 points a piece while junior, Michael Velasco added 16 points and junior, Dalton Carter finished the evening with 11 points. The final score was 76-70.
